About the work... At The Bay Pottery I produce gas fired stoneware pottery for domestic use. My forms are influenced by both the Japanese & European traditions of making. The main body is hand thrown. I also produce pieces for use in the Japanese art of Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arranging). I use glazes in soft natural hues, the reduction firing process ensuring that each piece is unique. About the studio... The pottery is situated in Armadale at the south end of the Island of Skye. This building has been here for about 20 years, it used to be an old café that we bought and converted into the studio & gallery. From my workshop I have a great view over the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of Knoydart. We are 200 meters away from the ferry that comes over from Mallaig on the mainland. In the summer the ferry comes in six times a day bringing tourists 'over the sea to Skye', and there is a great buzz to the place. The winter is a different story, it's all together a quieter place to be. The visitors leave and the wildlife seems to come back again. Otters can sometimes be spotted on the beach in front of the pottery, or a lone curlew picking away at the seaweed. It's at this time of year when I get time to think of new designs and shapes, and to catch up on production for the year ahead. |
